Body Energetics Technique

Founded and Developed By: Dr Robert J. Kay ND,DC,CNC, Dipl.AANC

What are we, this species known as man, Homo sapiens, human beings, people? A mass of electrically charged cells swimming in a vessel made up predominantly of water and billions of electrically charged cells called DNA, bones, muscle, organs, glands, hormones, a highly intricate soup of sorts. We don’t have to think to make every bodily function, function. Our brain does that for us all thru an intricate wiring system known as the nervous system. Due to this complexity of the human body, there needs to be a comprehensive system of diagnosis and treatment.

What is Body Energetics Technique (BET)?

Body Energetics Technique (BET), is a system of diagnosis and healing. Unlike other techniques, it is a synergy of many proven techniques, including Applied and Clinical Kinesiology, Body Integration, BEST, TBM, Acupuncture and other healing arts all rolled up into a unique and highly effective approach. Dr. Kay studied under several of the founders of these techniques:
Dr. George Goodheart, Dr. Walter Schmidt, Dr. Alan Beardall, Dr. Rene Espy, Dr. Nancy McBride and Dr. John Bandy. Their expertise provided a foundation upon which Dr. Kay built BET.

Principals of BET

The core principals of BET are accurate diagnosis and effective treatment for the individual; everyone is unique. Further, that all health issues are caused by four stresses on the body: physical, chemical, psychological and electromagnetic. These are typically unavoidable, so accurate diagnosis and treatment is critical.

The Stresses

In the early 1940’s a Hungarian born MD, Han Selye, mathematically proved and invented a word that changed the way we look at everything today. “Stress”. He proved mathematically that stress exists and is the cause of all disease; he proved that when you are under stress your body does one of three things: it gets well, it adapts or it dies. Selye called this “the Adaptation Theory”.

As modern day holistic healthcare practitioners, we continue to focus on these four types of stresses that affect our wellbeing and are intricately woven into our everyday lives. This goes hand in hand with the BET principal of ”treat the cause, not the symptom.”

  • Physical: Structurally, you have a skeletal system that supports your body; a muscular system that allows for locomotion. Falling down, getting in a car accident, sleeping, too much activity or too little activity cause stress on the musculoskeletal system.
  • Chemical: Chemically, you are made up of glands and organs which produce hormones that make everything work. Eating the wrong foods, drinking the wrong liquids, exposure to toxic chemicals all stress the system.
  • Psychological: The Psychological aspect of your body is made up of your brain and nervous system that controls the inter-communications within your body. Job and relationship and loss of a loved one causes stress on this system.
  • Electromagnetic: The Electromagnetic system governs the layers of EMF’s that surround and energetically protect the body. Cell phones, high-tension towers, microwaves and even computers affect the body negatively.

What are we, physically, but an intricate package of systems!

Accurate Diagnosis

The foundation of this work is based on the premise that “anything can cause anything.” That is why proper diagnosis is the key factor in achieving optimum health results. BET provides the most comprehensive diagnostic study of the body. By providing a broad spectrum of diagnostic tools, BET enables the practitioner to concentrate on every part of the body since similar symptoms do not always point to the same health problem. A headache may be from someone having poor posture, or from someone eating a toxic food, or from simply being worried about a project at work, or a combination of these stresses. All of these would result in the same headache, the skill is unearthing the true cause.

This goes hand-in-hand with the Onion Skin Theory. Simply, if you cut an onion open you will notice many rings. You would not know the onion was rotten unless you got to the core since the onion rots from the inside out). Just as we as humans, would never know we had a problem unless we had a symptom. Typically, the symptom is the last sign of the problem.

Effective Treatment

Once you pinpoint an accurate diagnosis, BET is a very accurate technique for determining the method of treatment that will be effective for the individual patient. With many treatment modalities in the BET repertoire, all patients can be accommodated.

All conditions can benefit from incorporating BET methods as it simply reads off the body what it would like to do to help itself. In this way the person is being supported as a whole to help themselves combat the specific disease or complaint.

BET was born out of the frustration of not knowing what the patient's body wants to have worked on and which technique would be the most appropriate. By developing a dialogue with the body, BET lets the patient's body establish what the primary imbalance is. BET then lets the body reveal the adaptive patterns it developed to compensate for this imbalance, allowing it to accumulate all the related stored information, evaluate it and then display the underlying cause. The body will then disclose which therapy will be most effective in resolving the underlying problem. This is just like a computer diagnostic.

Using BET a patient’s internal physiology can be accessed on a very deep level and then the best treatment selected; nutritional (diet, supplements), structural (chiropractic, cranial, musculoskeletal) and electromagnetic (electro-magnetic resonance therapy, flower remedies, homeopathic remedies, acupuncture, etc.).

Elements of BET Diagnosis and Treatment

BET is a system of measurement and a tool that allows the patient's own body to guide the physician's diagnostic path and the preferred prioritized therapy. BET is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure that accesses the biological function of a patient and is a radical departure from the invasive techniques commonly used today.

With the advent of Modern medicine and the use of such tools as Blood and Urinary lab tests, CAT scans, MRI’s, etc. Modern medicine still has not been able to find the true solution to the cause of the problem, which still goes undetected. Because these tests do not take into account the subtle imbalances that over time can become full-blown pathology or disease.

Using BET, you will explore a simple method of energetic muscle testing that can help you decode symptoms and become sensitive to the early warnings of body dysfunction. Although a recent discovery, BET draws heavily on Chinese medicine and facilitates balance of the energetic system. BET provides instant access to the knowledge that the mind and body are offering us.

Muscle Testing

Muscle testing is a valuable tool for tapping into the body’s innate intelligence to determine the strengthening and weakening effects of thoughts, statements, places, people, objects, foods, etc., on the body's energy system. Using muscle testing we can assess if something energetically strengthens us or weakens us. If it weakens us and we can discover the issues for the weakness we can correct them with energy techniques or even using simple intention. Put simply, muscle testing is a method of tapping into the innate intuition we all possess.BET uses muscle strength testing to ask questions and access different scenarios within the body. By eliciting strengths and weaknesses, the practitioner can quickly and effectively identify dysfunctions within the body.

We can determine all information the body has to offer using hand modes or mudras. The word “mode” is derived from the Latin word “modus” meaning measure. In Clinical Kinesiology, Body Integration and Body Energetics techniques we use the fingers as gauges, to measure the transmission of communicative responses in the body.

Muscle testing is a system of testing your muscles first for basic functional strength. If that muscle is “strong” when tested “in the clear” (while not being compared to another factor) that muscle can be used as an indicator for optimal or sub-optimal balance of other areas of your body. For example, your knee, elbow, ear, stomach, etc. can be checked with a related muscle test. If the indicator muscle and the area in question are tested simultaneously, the indicator muscle answers the question: Is this area balanced?

All conditions can benefit from incorporating Body Energetics Technique methods as it simply reads off the body what it would like to do to help itself. In this way the individuals are being supported as a whole, to help themselves combat the specific disease or complaint.

Hand Modes

Hand modes have been in use for over 5,000 years by Yogis and in Asian healing practices. It is believed that every area of the hand forms a reflex zone for an associated part of the body and the brain. In this way, we can consider the hands to be a mirror for our body and our mind; Mudras or Hand Modes is a practice to improve your physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. Our hands define our energy and fingers being the power points, are a link between brain, body and energy. The subtle hand and finger movements make important connections in the nervous system and stimulate specific energy pathways. The human body is an amalgamation of 5 elements of nature – Earth, Air, Water, Space and Fire & each finger acts as a representative of one element. Yogis believed if one wants to cure any disease, they could tap into the energy of the elements and rectify the imbalance with the practice of suitable mudras.

Hand modes revolutionized the practice of kinesiology by giving the practitioner a means of directly posing questions for the body to answer. Almost like a body sign language, a way we are able to communicate with the body, which allows the practitioner to get right to the root cause of what is going on with a patient. Hand modes are basically mudras or positions of the hands that represent specific energy patterns that are easily recognized by the nervous system. There are specific hand modes that correspond to organs, conditions, and treatment options. These are like the keystrokes that a BET and CK doctor uses to navigate through the "bio-computer."

BET finds the bodies stored information in a system of nested files, similar to the way a computer does, or rather, like a network of several integrated computer systems. Dr. Kay helped to map out the intricacies of the body's information processing systems, filling volumes of research manuals.

BET uses muscle strength testing to ask questions and access different scenarios within the body. By finding out whether a group of muscles is either strong or weak dysfunctions can be evaluated within the body.

In the same fashion beneficial nutritional supplements can be diagnosed. This added nutritional approach has proven to be more successful than simply avoiding the allergic foods. Food avoidance may stop the immediate allergic symptoms but does not necessarily heal the internal problem, this is what the nutritional supplementation will achieve.

Using BET, a patient's internal physiology can be accessed on a very deep level and then the best treatment selected; chemical/nutritional (diet, amino acids, vitamins and minerals, fatty acids, homeopathics, etc.), structural (chiropractic, cranial, muscle acupuncture, neuro-lymphatic and neuro-vascular therapies, etc.), and psychological/electromagnetic (electro-magnetic resonance therapy, cell salts, NLP, flower remedies, homeopathics, gem and crystal remedies, etc.)

History of Body Energetics

Basically, one could say it began with Hippocrates (the father of modern medicine), who showed us that disease was a natural process. That the signs and symptoms of a disease were caused by the natural reactions of the body to the disease process and that the chief role of the physician was to aid the natural resistance of the body to overcome the metabolic imbalance and restore health and harmony to the organism.

Hippocrates found that health is a harmonious balance of what was called the Four Humors. Disease results from their disharmony and imbalance. The physician's job is to restore health by correcting the imbalance and restoring harmony to the humors.

To quote Hippocrates:

"The body of man has in itself blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile; these make up the nature of the body, and through these he feels pain or enjoys health. Now, he enjoys the most perfect health when these elements are duly proportioned to one another in respect to compounding, power and bulk, and when they are perfectly mingled. Pain is felt when one of these elements is in defect or excess, or is isolated in the body without being compounded with all the others."

In 1977, Dr. Alan Beardall began the development of a technique using hand modes, which he called Clinical Kinesiology (CK). CK was developed as a tool to measure when to do what, and for how long. CK was used to better organize the many approaches of the healing arts into a system that is practical, measurable and reproducible. This gives the doctor a method to diagnose, measure, and apply proper therapy at the proper time.

Dr. Rene Espy and Dr. Nancy McBride continued the tremendous work that Dr. Beardall began. Using an Electro Acu-scope and a Biorhythmic Stimulator, they determined that hand modes are a definite patterns of brain wave modulation the body displays hologramically. A hand mode is nothing more than a frequency the body recognizes. When used properly, you get an accurate, specific and permanent correction.

Dr. Kay’s extensive research began in 1983, working with and studying AK under Goodheart, Bandy and Beardall. Taking a different approach to the body than that of AK practitioners, Beardall saw it as an interconnected network for information processing and introduced the use of “hand modes” and the “bio-computer” concept of kinesiology. In 1987 Dr. Kay began extensive work with Drs. Espy and McBride in developing Body Integration. In 1991, after several years of study, Dr. Kay developed Body Energetics Technique.

The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease." - attributed to Thomas Edison.
